TREES CARE FOR THEIR NEIGHBORS

A Forest is an interconnected network of plants, animals & birds, insects, and Trees, that all work together for the benefit of the whole of the forest.

However, Trees although they seem dormant, are very active and can care for the hurt or harmed trees within their close area, by using the fungi that's around the roots, as like an internet connection.

A group of Researchers discovered that a group of trees is keeping their poorly neighbor, a tree stump, alive. The stump should actually have died by now but the neighboring trees are keeping alive by funneling water and nutrients through the interconnected root system.

What makes this find so incredible, is that it proves, There is Consciousness within all things. At this level of consciousness the Trees know to help each other and communicate when needed. The Trees consciously connect to each other.

The Discovery

Auckland is a popular hiking location with plenty of woodland and forests to explore. One day, Sebastian Leuzinger at the Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand, and a colleague were hiking through one of the many forest tracks just west of Auckland when they noticed a single tree stump with living tissue growing from it, which they had never seen before.

Understandably, they went over to take a closer look and decided to put a number of continuous water monitors in the kauri (Agathis australis) stump and in two nearby adult trees of the same species. The results starting to come in over the next few days, weeks, and even months, and they were quite surprising.

The Results

The researchers monitored the water movements over the following weeks and they uncovered a secret, unspoken relationship between the water flow in the trees and the lonely stump. So what does this actually mean? Well, when the neighboring trees evaporated any water through their leaves during the day, the water movement in the stump remained low. However, when the trees were dormant during the evening, the water would travel through the root network and begin circulating throughout the stump, giving it just enough water and nutrients so survive without its own foliage.

📷

The same thing happened when the weather became cloudy and/or rainy. The water flow would drop in the trees, as its mostly driven by evaporation, and so it picked up in the stump. With more cloud and water, the surrounding trees had no sunlight so evapotranspiration couldn't occur. This means the stump benefited.

Superorganism

This research, combined with a growing awareness of the way fungi help trees exchange carbon and other nutrients only strengthen the idea that trees aren't individuals or distinct entities but rather a network, a superorganism if you will. Leuzinger believes that this networking of water among trees may make them more resistant to water scarcity, if the situation were to arise. That said, there's also a chance that it increases the risk of diseases spreading. Kauri trees, the species which were originally studied, are specifically at risk and they are currently being affected by a deadly disease called kauri dieback. If this were to spread through water sharing, the results could be disastrous.

While foresters have reported living stumps as far back as 1800, this is the first time that any have actually been studied in such detail. There's still lots of research that needs to be done to fully understand these networks, which will hopefully be undertaken in the near future.
