For those of us who wonder if earthlings are the only intelligent species in the Milky Way and beyond, try this theory on for size:
Two scientists in Kazakhstan believe humans may have an extraterrestrial “stamp” embedded into our genetic code, a mathematical message that would not be explained by Darwin’s theory of biological evolution.
The scientists are suggesting that an advanced alien civilization “seeded” our galaxy eons ago with an ET signal that eventually found its way to Earth, implanting a genetic code into humans, reports Discovery.com.
Physicist Vladimir I. shCherbak of al-Farabi Kazakh National University of Kazakhstan and astrobiologist Maxim A. Makukov of the Fesenkvo Astrophysical Institute refer to this far-out concept as “biological SETI.”
The results of their research — “The ‘Wow! signal’ of the terrestrial genetic code” — can be found in the peer-reviewed journal, Icarus.
The title of their study, which was partially financed by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, refers to an unexplained radio signal detected by SETI scientists in 1977.

While SETI — the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence — relies on the use of radio telescopes and signal-processing technology to search the heavens for alien life, shCherbak and Makukov theorize there’s a better way of detecting ETs.
The Kazakhstan scientists believe there’s a possible intelligent “signal” within the human genetic code.
“It has been repeatedly proposed to expand the scope for SETI, and one of the suggested alternatives to radio is the biological media,” they write in the abstract of their study.
“Genomic DNA is already used on Earth to store non-biological information. Though smaller in capacity, but stronger in noise immunity is the genetic code. ... Once fixed, the code might stay unchanged over cosmological timescales; in fact, it is the most durable construct known. Therefore, it represents an exceptionally reliable storage for an intelligent signature.”
Makukov and shCherbak contend that life throughout the galaxy may have been spread by intelligent design, that instead of life developing as a result of random processes, maybe extraterrestrials had a hand in it.
But, of course, that begs the question: If the seeds of life somehow originated with ETs, who first designed the designers?

After it was proposed that life on Earth might descend from seeding by an earlier civilization, some authors noted that this alternative offers a testable aspect: the seeds could be supplied with a signature that might be found in extant organisms. In particular, it was suggested that the optimal location for such an artifact is the genetic code, as the least evolving part of cells. However, as the mainstream view goes, this scenario is too speculative and cannot be meaningfully tested because encoding/decoding a signature within the genetic code is ill-defined, so any retrieval attempt is doomed to guesswork. Here we refresh the seeded-Earth hypothesis and discuss the motivation for inserting a signature. We then show that "biological SETI" involves even weaker assumptions than traditional SETI and admits a well-defined methodological framework. After assessing the possibility in terms of molecular and evolutionary biology, we formalize the approach and, adopting the guideline of SETI that encoding/decoding should follow from first principles and be convention-free, develop a retrieval strategy. Applied to the canonical code, it reveals a nontrivial precision structure of interlocked systematic attributes. To assess this result in view of the initial assumption, we perform statistical, comparison, interdependence, and semiotic analyses. Statistical analysis reveals no causal connection to evolutionary models of the code, interdependence analysis precludes overinterpretation, and comparison analysis shows that known code variations lack any precision-logic structures, in agreement with these variations being post-seeding deviations from the canonical code. Finally, semiotic analysis shows that not only the found attributes are consistent with the initial assumption, but that they make perfect sense from SETI perspective, as they maintain some of the most universal codes of culture.

Is An Alien Message Embedded In Our Genetic Code?
The answer to whether or not we are alone in the universe could be right under our nose, or, more literally, inside every cell in our body.
Could our genes have an intelligently designed "manufacturer's stamp" inside them, written eons ago elsewhere in our galaxy? Such a "designer label" would be an indelible stamp of a master extraterrestrial civilization that preceded us by many millions or billions of years. As their ultimate legacy, they recast the Milky Way in their own biological image.
Vladimir I. shCherbak of al-Farabi Kazakh National University of Kazakhstan, and Maxim A. Makukov of the Fesenkov Astrophysical Institute, hypothesize that an intelligent signal embedded in our genetic code would be a mathematical and semantic message that cannot be accounted for by Darwinian evolution. They call it "biological SETI." What's more, they argue that the scheme has much greater longevity and chance of detecting E.T. than a transient extraterrestrial radio transmission.
Writing in the journal Icarus, they assert: "Once fixed, the code might stay unchanged over cosmological timescales; in fact, it is the most durable construct known. Therefore it represents an exceptionally reliable storage for an intelligent signature. Once the genome is appropriately rewritten the new code with a signature will stay frozen in the cell and its progeny, which might then be delivered through space and time."
To pass the designer label test, any patterns in the genetic code must be highly statistically significant and possess intelligent-like features that are inconsistent with any natural know process, say the authors.
They go on to argue that their detailed analysis that the human genome (map here) displays a thorough precision-type orderliness in the mapping between DNA's nucleotides and amino acids. "Simple arrangements of the code reveal an ensemble of arithmetical and ideographical patterns of symbolic language." They say this includes the use of decimal notation, logical transformations, and the use of the abstract symbol of zero. "Accurate and systematic, these underlying patterns appear as a product of precision logic and nontrivial computing," they assert.
